About us

Comprised of different founding members like pet transport companies, animal behaviourists, charities and vets, PETRA is to be constituted as a Limited Company (PLC) registered at Companies House in the UK as a non-profit organisation.

PETRA is the first welfare-led trade association created to promote legal, accountable international live animal transport throughout Europe and beyond.

Constituted, PETRA represents the interests of animals, the public, and its members, in that order.

Together PETRA makes representation to the European Commission (EC) and national authorities, for example: Defra/APHA, so as to provide them with a SPOC (Single Point of Contact) to all involved in this important sector.

PETRA endeavours to:

1)…raise welfare

2)…raise public awareness

3)…formalise professional standards around the ‘Other Species’ category as                defined by EC Reg 1/2005 and the Balai Directive (92/65/EEC)

4)…see to proper enforcement of all vehicle and personnel qualifications under               the standing rules

5)…prevent smuggling, thwart exploitation of live animals for monetary gain,              and bolster bio-security in the pursuit of public health

PETRA´s guiding principles are: professionalism, transparency, and a fearless determination to stand up for live animals where weakened ‘guardians of the gate’ have been left so powerless by the governments that employ them that true leadership is now required.

PETRA’s scope is the geographic landmass of Europe, encompassing the EU, EFTA members, plus the United Kingdom.
